In a departure from my work as a conductor, I have been travelling to remote valleys in the Himalayas and observing their disappearing cultures, at least once a year over the past 20 years. I visited a large part of the Himalayas in India, Nepal, Bhutan and China. One day I hope to visit Pakistan – I would then regard my knowledge of this region as complete and I would like to publish a book with my photography. Owing to globalization, the cultural identity of these minorities is disappearing. I have tried to capture this in my photography. At the same time this is a time for contemplation and inner peace where my ego is repeatedly rebalanced in the context of the overwhelming dimension of nature.
